Parent/Child Workshops
These workshops are between 1 ½ and 2 hours in length and serve up to
50 participants (parents and children)
They can take place in school, after school, or on weekends.
We have provided these workshops in a number of schools through the center For Arts Education's Parents as Arts Partners grants.
Bookmaking
Participants create individual books and covers from common, low-cost materials such as cloth, string, foil, and recycled paper. Shows techniques for making different types of books including comic strip, accordion,
"flip," pop-up, and "pull" books.
Circus Arts
Run away with the Circus! Before long students will balancing a feather on their noses and juggling with one hand. We will explore ways that teachers can use the themes of circus and clowning to teach a variety of curriculum objectives, making learning and teaching fun and exciting! Particular emphasis is placed on literacy using both circus techniques and a variety of excellent books that use circus as their theme.
Collage and Mosaic
This workshop teaches low cost alternatives to ceramic mosaic tile, which is expensive and laborious to use. Cut paper, ripped paper, and cardboard are used as “tiles" and a variety of methods for transforming student drawings into completed works are shared.
Creating with the Brush
Participants learn techniques of brush use and become familiar with different available materials including oil pastels, tempera and acrylic paints and watercolors. Themes for our work may be based on curriculum content, a specific artistic period, or cultural influence.
Creative Movement
Participants will explore movement and rhythm. How can we use movement to allow students to express themselves? How can we use movement to reduce stress and teach students how to relate physically to others in positive ways?
Drawing Workshop
This workshop offers an introduction to basic drawing from observation. Students use a variety of drawing materials in a structure that ensures a sense of accomplishment and freedom to allow for individuality and creative expression.
Kite-Making
Your family will learn about aerodynamics, the use of geometric principles and discuss the history and cultural significance of kite flying in a variety of world cultures, while building a kite. These kites have been made by students as young as the second grade and are all able to fly.
Milk Carton Art
Participants will make mini-dioramas and other projects using recycled milk cartons, discuss the benefits of recycling, and find ways to turn "trash" and other no/low cost materials into art. Every school throws away thousands of these cartons each year, turn yours into treasure!
Mime
Students will learn how to communicate and express thoughts and feelings through the universal language of the body, mime. They will analyze how the body works by slowing down and carefully studying simple movements and human interactions in a theatrical setting.
Music and Rhythm
This workshop provides multicultural exploration of the use of drumming in many different parts of the world. Through demonstration and hands-on activities participants will learn ways to make use of percussion instruments. Apart from the music, the concepts discussed will help parents impart important lessons about diversity and the power of working together.
Paper Sculpture
By folding and gluing together paper we can create three-dimensional objects that are either functional or aesthetically pleasing, often both! Classes have created chairs, tables, houses, and faces as well as abstract forms.
Printmaking
Using household objects, fruits, and vegetables, teachers will learn simple and fun printing techniques and create their own printed images. These techniques require no specialized equipment such as printing presses.
Puppetry
This workshop focuses on creating puppets from easily obtained objects (i.e. paper plates, sponges) and using them to create expressive puppets. The process also promotes shape recognition and simple geometry. This is not just a paper plate stuck on the end of a stick!
Self-Portrait Workshop
Students create self-portraits through their preferred medium such as drawing, painting and collage. Students of all ages produce startling self-portraits by observing their own faces. We emphasize expressing emotion through the creative arts.
Shadow Puppetry
The ancient art of shadow puppetry uses cut-out forms to create beautiful visual effects as the puppets are held against a cloth screen and lit from behind. Students learn to create representational puppets starting from geometric shapes.
Stress Management
Stress negatively impacts everyone's sense of well-being. Participants will learn how to identify sources of stress and learn techniques for reducing stress in their lives. We look at the role of nutrition, stretching and relaxation in overcoming the physical impact of stress and we will explore strategies for change.
